About Cash Converters
The Beginning
Brian Cumins, the company's founder and Chairman, opened his
first retail store in Perth, West Australia, in November 1984. The
merchandising formula and trading style that are now integral to
the Group's success were developed and tested in the marketplace
over the next four years. A total of seven stores were established
and trading successfully before the first two franchised stores
were opened in Perth in June 1988.
International Growth
The Cash Converters concept has flourished and become
internationally proven with 578 stores operating in 21 countries
worldwide. Australia represents the most mature market with 150
stores in that country. Even so Australia is experiencing continued
growth in per store activity. Elsewhere, Great Britain, South
Africa, France, Italy, Spain, Canada, and Germany have in recent
years witnessed accelerating growth with new stores opening and
existing stores increasing their retail sales. These new markets
have many years of market growth ahead of them before they too
become mature markets.
The success of the Cash Converters concept continues to be
repeatedly proven worldwide, as consumers in these and other
countries embrace the convenience of converting their quality used
goods into cash, and enjoy the affordable retail bargains Cash
Converters stores offer.
Cash Converters International Limited is now a public company
with listings on the Australian and UK stock exchanges.
New Zealand
The first store opened in New Zealand in late 1993 in Auckland.
New Zealand consumers have responded positively to the Cash
Converters concept with a total of 13 stores currently trading. The
stores are located in exclusive territories and strategically
located in prime retail sites that maximise the buying and
retailing activities that are the essential elements of a
successful Cash Converters store.
